illu's Aqua Supercar Concept - model progress

Postby illusionest » Fri May 20, 2011 9:14 pm

HELLO

OK, as most of you know, in canada, we get snow half a year. So half a year i can barely work outside to do the model...

since we last left off here ... back in July 2010:
http://www.ps-garage.com/forum/viewtopi ... 6&start=30

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/8638 ... tos010.jpg

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/7536 ... tos011.jpg

http://a.imageshack.us/img135/9827/mlaw ... tos012.jpg

what happened was i took the doors from the broken shell and put it over to the good one.
BUT, i realized the doors were way too heavy and my mini hinges couldnt have held them in place.

So what i ended up doing yesterday and today, was making a female mold of ANOTHER shell (just the door area), vacuum forming just that door piece for accurate thickness, and then trim it out again to put on the car.

That way i have a equal thickness throughout the door, and super lightweight.

anyway less words more photos, see below

PRIMER - first coat (so i know whats sanded, whats not)

we love closeups

...is really just masking tape, for now :P

Thanks Ta2man.

This project has been going on for quite a while now. If you look back on the older threads you'll see the progress of how the clay sculpture went into casting, into the shell, and now, into individual pieces for further detail.

so today i spent some time working on the molds for my windows.

I had these previously cast in plaster. but they have to be perfectly shiny in order to be vac-formed. Otherwise, i'll be doing a hell a lot of clean up work after.

photos go in order from left to right, top to bottom.

first, the plaster, i was able to polish the plaster mold itself, first time ive tried that. It went from pure matte color to semi-gloss. But, it was still too rough for vac-forming.

Image

So i clear coated it, but the paint was pretty rough itself lol, so i had to wet sand that coat, and polish it again.

after a couple hours, i was able to read the numbers on my lightbulb.

some updates

with the 2 doors
Image

yay doors
Image

this is how it LOOKED like
Image

so i decided to open up my trunk lol

this was a weird change because i didnt have trunk lines, i had to guess it ... ahh

Image

pretty much just took a dremel to it and just carved it out!

Image

now for the floor pan / base plate... i dont know what size will fit, so i measured / taped where the shell is, on the black ABS plastic with green tape. then i went in and cut out (with a saw, of course) the areas i didnt need... and... sanded it down, and fits!

Image

this is the board that will hold my entire interior. im making it like this because i would like to take apart my shell / interior separately to paint them. if i glued everything together it would be hell to paint them individually.

Image

so after thats done, back to body work, mostly trunk area now
Image

and no, the jar at the back is not what you think it is. its contact cement glue. and yes, its white and sticky.

Image

i also drilled the holes in for the wheel axles.
so i should have some photos of it with the wheels on soon. time for some primer ... again!

so after some work today, repainted in primer ... again

trunk lid is also fitting very well!
Image

front 3/4
Image

you can notice that ive fitted the wheels on now too, YAY
Image

and in some angles, you'll notice that ive lightly painted the inside of the car black....
i was hoping the black would come out better lol, but the inside of my shell is way too disgusting, lumpy and crap...

but anywho
Image

right now im working on the taillight, and headlight housings. once im done those, i'll vac form the housing, drill some holes, and start wiring the LED lights!

i also need to start shaping my audio system in the back too

more updates to come!
